(SeaPRwire) – Amazon’s decision to axe the Stargate reboot is a real head – scratcher. In an era where reboots are big business, pulling the plug before production even starts is a bold move. It makes you wonder what went wrong behind the scenes.
According to Variety, Prime Video canned the Stargate reboot. Interest in it started in 2022 when Amazon bought MGM. In 2025, Martin Gero, a long – time Stargate writer, was set as showrunner. But before filming began, it was canceled.
The reason? Amazon execs worried Gero’s take wouldn’t appeal beyond the existing fanbase. Stargate has a vast lore from multiple movies and shows, which new fans would need to catch up on. This „fan service“ critique is common as studios value broad recognizability.
Amazon is juggling many new IPs, like Lord of the Rings and James Bond. It should learn from successful retellings like Fallout and Vox Machina. A Stargate show can work without over – relying on existing lore.
The streaming market is competitive. Amazon needs to balance fan loyalty and new – viewer appeal. Canceling the reboot might be a setback, but it could also lead to a better, more accessible Stargate project.
Amazon must find the sweet spot for Stargate to thrive in the long run.
